Handkerchief, commemorative handkerchief
This handkerchief depicts Nathan Mayer Rothschild standing by his favourite column in the Royal Exchange. Rothschild founded the English banking house of N.M. Rothschild. Born in Frankfurt, he came to Britain in 1798 to run the Manchester division of the family textile business. He soon began to deal on the London stock exchange and his fortune grew. Rothschild lent money to important individuals and organisations, such as the Bank of England. His relatives had established other branches of the business throughout Europe, creating an international network of contacts.
