Sabbath School
Cotton handkerchief; roller print in brown dye, 1805-15. Possibly a child's handkerchief, this probably commemorates an anniversary of the establishment of the Sabbath Schools by Robert Raikes in 1782. A similar example in the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York is inscribed 'Henry Bowen's Chemical Print ... Boston", together with educational jigsaw, puzzle and alphabet.
Caption: "Sabbath Schools first instituted by Robert Raikes in Gloucester in the year of our Lord, 1782" with a hymn. Three scenes including a portrait of Raikes and various verses. Narrow border of reserved coiling leaves.
