A faithful representation of the trial of Her Most Gracious Majesty Caroline Queen of England in the House of Lords, 1820
Cotton; plate print in dark brown dye from engravings by I Slack, 1820. Queen Caroline, the estranged wife of George IV, was, at his instigation, tried for adultery and misconduct in the House of Lords when she returned to England in 1820. The issue attracted enormous publc interest and sympathy, and although some guilt was established, the King's ill-usage and Henry Brougham's spirited defence produced such feeling in her favour that the Divorce Bill was abandoned.
White glazed cotton handkerchief printed from engraved plate in deep brown. Unhemmed. "A faithful representation of the trial of Her Most Gracious Majesty Caroline Queen of England in the House of Lords, 1820". In lower border a key to personalities or objects shown, centra top medallion with portrain of Bartolemo Bergami. Note: "Slack, Delt & Sc" lower right edge.
