Entertainment at Guildhall
In the 19th century, visiting foreign monarchs often made formal visits to the City of London. On 4 December 1855, the King of Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel II, attended a reception and luncheon at the Guildhall. He was an important royal visitor as he was seen as the figurehead of the Risorgimento, the Italian unification movement. He was accompanied by his prime minister, Cavour. The Recorder presented the address of the Lord Mayor and the Corporation of London. The King gave a commanding reply in Italian and then party proceeded through to the council chamber for lunch.
The menu of the lunch is printed in gold, red and blue on white silk station. It would have been expensive to produce and shows that no expense was spared for this important city event.
