A Sailor's Assembly Room at the East-End

Illustrated cutting from 'The Graphic' magazine, 1871, entitled 'A Sailor's Assembly Room in the East-End'. The illustration, by E. Buckman, shows a scene in an East End tavern. On th back there is text relating to the image, which contrasts the popular reputation of East End drinking dens as violent and crime ridden with the reality of honest sailors going about their business. To the right of the picture is a standing figure of a Chinese man. The text refers to him as 'the one suspicious character in the room, the one whose means of getting a living are known to himself alone and are not of a nature to be divulged. He shows a rather ominous partiality for the society of drunken men.'
