Printed Ephemera — 1880-09
Artists' Homes No. 7 Studio and Residence at Holland Park Sir Fredk. Leighton PRA
Illustrated cutting from 'The Building News', 1 October 1880. It depicts the back view of the house built by George Aitchison from 1864 for the artist Frederic Leighton, near Holland Park. This is now the Leighton House Museum. The second storey artist's studio has large windows to maximise the natural light. A number of other artists settled nearby and Leighton's residence and studio became one of the social centres of the London art world. In 1877 Aitchison extended the house by constructing the Arab Hall, the dome of which can be seen on the right of this image. This octagonal room was based on an Arabic palace in Palermo in Sicily, and had a central fountain and walls decorated with the artist's collection of Islamic tiles.
