Braille Reader II
Book entitled 'Braille Reader II', priced at 4d. The pages are embossed with braille, comprising an alphabet made up of raised dots designed for blind people to read by touch. It was produced by the National Institute for the Blind, now the RNIB, based in Great Portland Street, W1. This organisation has provided braille reading material to blind people from its inception in the 1860s. From 1918 it set up schools to educate blind children. Today the institute is the largest braille publisher in Europe, producing texts ranging from books and magazines to knitting patterns and sheet music.
