Printed Ephemera — 1992-2005
Labour in Finsbury Park
Diane Abbott is one of the MPs pictured on this election flyer. In 1987 she made history as the first Black woman in Britain to be elected as an MP. Abbott was born in Paddington to Jamaican immigrant parents. After graduating from Cambridge she worked as a civil servant, then later moved into broadcasting and journalism. Abbot was also active within the Labour Party, especially in the areas of race equality and trades unions. She was elected as a local councillor for Westminster before running as MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, the constituency she continues to represent.
