Marine Parade, Southend
Picture postcard showing a colour view of the Marine Parade, Southend. Popular with east London's working class community Southend was known as ‘East London by the Sea’. The resort was easily reached by green line bus or by railway from Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street. Initially popular for day trips the introduction of paid annual leave from the 1930s also boosted the resort's popularity as a holiday resort as many families chose to stay a week in its increasingly affordable guest houses.
