Pavilion Theatre, Whitechapel
This photograph shows the Pavilion Theatre on Whitechapel Road, the main venue for Yiddish theatre during the early 20th century. Although culturally diverse, all East European jews who settled in east London were united by the Yiddish language. As well as performances of Yiddish plays the Pavilion Theatre also hosted concerts, boxing matches and political rallies. The theatre closed in 1937 as Jewish immigration slowed and cinema became the leading form of mass entertainment.
