Feeding baby
This photograph was probably taken by a charity or missionary working amongst London's poor. Such organisations used the power of photography to raise funds for their work and make the general public more aware of the plight of the poor. Babies who lived in London's slums were lucky to survive their first year of life. Many died from diarrhoaea, disease and even malnutrition. The caption on the back of this photograph, probably written by a member of the charity, reads as follows: 'Feeding baby. It is often at the cost of the greatest sacrifice that baby is fed. Many times the home is stripped during a workless period, and as a final sacrifice mothers wedding ring has to go.'
