A food convoy under military escort during the 1926 General Strike, Royal Victoria Docks
During the General Strike of 1926, John H Avery photographed this scene outside the Royal Victoria Docks. It shows the formation of a food convoy.
Army, navy and police personnel are preparing to escort lorries full of food driven by civilians. They are on their way to various merchants and markets across London.
Usually food convoys were reasonably peaceful, but the use of the military prompted widespread and sometimes violent protest.
