Gully machine workers
Gully Machine workers (street cleaners), 1974. Alfred Middleton (left) had been driving this gully machine for four years when John Eastcott took this photo. By then he had worked for the Corporation of London for 47 years. He began as a 'street orderly boy', earning 32 shillings a week cleaning up after the horses. Bert Keeple (right) had worked with the corporation for 14 years, 11 of them operating this machine.
