Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 1476
Canterbury Tales
This leaf comes from William Caxton's edition of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales printed at Westminster in 1476. The typeface is modelled on a contemporary style of handwriting and the leaf covers a section of the Clerk's Tale of 'Griselda', lines 867 beginning: 'And here ayeen my clothing I restore | And eke my weddyng ryng for euermore ...' and on the verso (other side): 'Towards her fadris hous is she fare | The folk her folowyn wepyng in her wey...'. Caxton and his fellow printers were keen to print the works of the great medieval English poets, and Chaucer was held in high regard.
