Printed Ephemera — 1912
Your vote and interest is solicited on behalf of George Lansbury
This parliamentary by-election campaign postcard was produced to canvas support for George Lansbury. Lansbury was elected Labour member of parliament for Bow and Bromley, east London in 1910. As a supporter of women's suffrage, he resigned his seat in the House of Commons in 1912 in protest against the treatment of suffragette prisoners. Lansbury fought the subsequent by-election in favour of votes for women but he was defeated by 731 votes.
After losing the by-election Lansbury helped found the Daily Herald, a socialist newspaper. He edited the paper until he was re-elected to parliament in 1922. In 1932 he became the leader of the Labour Party. A committed pacifist, George stepped down from the leadership in 1935 in disagreement at the party's foreign policy.
