Bottle, ink bottle
In 1766, Louis Steigenberger, a German immigrant who anglicised his surname to Berger, set up a paint manufacturing business in London. By the late18th century, the firm had become known as Berger & Sons, with a shop near Cheapside and a factory in Homerton. This jar originally contained paint made by the company. During the 19th century Germans in London gained a reputation for their expertise in the chemical, dyeing and paint industries.
