Ticket, pawnbroker's ticket
This ticket, stamped with pawn number 136, was issued by the pawnbroker Thomas Oliver of 362 Old Kent Road to Jane Simpson of 24 Mina Road, in May 1907.
By 1900, London had up to 700 pawnbrokers' shops. The trade played an important role in working-class finance, supplying over £8 million annually to London families. Many pledges were made on a weekly basis. On Monday morning, best clothing and jewellery worn over the weekend was taken to the pawnbroker in return for a cash loan. Saturday evening, being 'pay day' was the busiest time for the pawnbroker as customers crowded in to redeem pledged articles.
