Statuette, deity statuette
Copper alloy statuette representing the Hindu deity Ganesh. He is depicted with an elephant's head, four arms and a large stomach. Ganesh is the god of knowledge and the remover of obstacles and is worshipped at the beginning of any auspicious ceremony or blessing. According to Hindu mythology, he is the son of Shiva and Parvati and is the scribe who wrote down in Sanskrit the epic poem the 'Mahabharata'. Ganesh is a popular figure for Hindus, and is also important in the religions of Buddhism and Jainism.
