Joy Gardner Campaign
Joy Gardner died when she was being deported in August 1993. She came to Britain from Jamaica on a six month visa and appealed to stay with her mother who resided in Britain. The appeal was rejected, but Gardner remained in London together with her son. The immigration and police officers who came to her home say that she resisted their attempts to deport her. They gagged her with surgical tape to restrain her and she died of asphyxiation. The verdict of the inquest into her death was 'misadventure' and no-one was held responsible.
