Printed Ephemera — 1979-1981
A & M Halal Meat Co Ltd
Handbill printed in English, Urdu and Gujarati announcing the opening of the A & M Halal Meat Company's Upton Park shop, run by Ebrahim Mulla. The company claims that they are 'the first and only producer and suppliers of Halal lamb bergers, halal sausages, polony, seek kebabs and meat in the UK'. Addressing Muslim customers, the handbill contains an extract from the Qur'an asking believers to 'Eat Halal from the earth'. The neighbouring boroughs of Newham and Tower Hamlets have London's largest Muslim communities. For meat to be 'Halal', the Muslim religion requires that slaughter of animals be carried out with a single cut to the throat, preferably by a Muslim butcher.
