Fashion — 1984
Skirt
Skirt from a nappa leather suit, autumn/winter 1984. Designed by Jean Muir.
Jean Muir used leather and suede like cloth, exploiting the texture, suppleness and colour of the skin. This suit was featured in British Vogue in August 1984. The wrap-over skirt is cut so that hem dips at the front echoing the movement of the jacket fronts.
The silversmiths Harrison Young (Simon Harrison and Iain Young) designed the sterling silver buttons. Muir's attention to detail was integral to her design ethos and she took particular care in the selection and treatment of buttons. This was reflected in Anthony Green's 1979 portrait 'Jean Muir checking buttons'.
