Social History — 1916
Badge, badge of office
Gilt badge of office worn by a delegate from the Hearts of Oak Building Society to the extension of the Society's offices in 1916.
Although a new head office building had been erected in Euston Road in 1906, membership and staff numbers had increased very rapidly following the introduction of National Health Insurance and it became necessary to build a new wing on the original structure. This was to house a number of departments including that dealing with the provision of State insurance.
Hearts of Oak were amongst the first of the Friendly Societies to govern State Insurance Business for the government until National Insurance was introduced in 1948.
