Printed Ephemera — 1850
Playbill
Playbill announcing performances at the Theatre Royal, Adelphi, 1850. The playbill is dated for the 3rd and 4th of June, 1850 and advertises performances of 'White Sargeants', the opening night of 'Esmeralda', and 'Jack in the Green'. There is an emphasis on musical and dance performances, and at this time the theatre was directed by Madame Celeste (1818-1882). Celeste was trained to dance in France, and performed in New York and Liverpool before coming to London. She retured from dancing and took up acting, and then theatre management. After managing the Adelphi with Benjamin Webster she took over sole management of the Lyceum in 1861.
