Printed Ephemera — 1823
Playbill
This playbill describes the performers and redecorated facilities at the new season of the Surrey Theatre. Although it is dated Monday 11th August no year is given, but the list of performers suggests the date 1823. The playbill refers to Mr Watkins Burroughs, who had been the propieter of the theatre for eighteen months, as well as Mrs Fitzwilliam and Mr H Kemble who performed there. Miss Eliza Vincent was performing at the Surrey at this time, but is not mentioned on the playbill. The playbill boasts about the installation of a "splendid gas chandelier" in the theatre. Gas lighting was a new feature to theatres, and had been installed at the Lyceum, Drury Lane and Covent Garden by 1817.
