Printed Ephemera — 1872
Playbill
Playbill announcing performances taking place at the Holborn Theatre Royal, 18th December 1872. This single-column playbill would have been used to advertise the theatre. It has two colours of ink to help it stand out from other playbills, as London's theatres competed with one another for audiences. The playbill includes information about performances of 'The Lottery Ticket', 'Popcatapetl' and 'Tears! Idle Tears', and a beneft for G. Richardson, the musical director.
Mr J.W. Wallace's 'Sketch of "Negro" Life' appears at the bottom of the bill. Minstrel shows became a feature of entertainment in London, following their popularity in America. These acts involved white performers in blackface make-up enacting stereotypes about black people. Minstrel acts declined as audiences found racial discrimination less acceptable.
