Port & River — 1769
Will
This part printed, part handwritten Merchant Seaman's Will refers to the estate of Thomas Bartlett, a Captains' Steward for the East India Company. The will was made by Bartlett before he set sail on the Duke of Gloucester East Indiaman. In the will, dated 14 December 1769, Bartlett names his fiance Alice Roberts as a beneficiary of his estate. Thomas Bartlett was employed as Captain's Steward on a number of East India Company ships between 1750 and 1779. In this role he was also allowed to carry out a small amount of private trade, buying goods for sale in India and China and investing the proceeds in goods for sale in England. With profits from this trade Bartlett purchased a shop in the Strand and two houses in Shoreditch.
