Ossie Clark cemented London's reputation as a centre for experimentation and originality. Inspired by the past he developed a new fashionable ideal, reintroducing glamour and femininity with clothes that were expertly cut to fit and flatter a woman's body.
The skirt of this halter-neck dress is made from three panels of bias cut fabric. The panel on the right hand side is decorated with three separate, pleated flounces, echoing the pleated flounce on the left hand strap at the neck of the dress. The back of the dress is cut-away in a deep 'v' reaching to the waist.
Ossie Clark trained at the Regional College of Art in Manchester and from 1962 at the Royal College of Art in London. From 1965 he collaborated with his future wife, the textile designer Celia Birtwell, creating clothes that fused pattern and form.
