Working History — 1960
Telephone
700 series telephones were introduced by the General Post Office in 1959. They became the standard telephone supplied by the Post Office to its customers until the 1980s. In this period telephones had to be rented from the Post Office and were not available to buy.
The Post Office sub-contracted the manufacturing of its telephones to a range of companies. This model 706L telephone was made by the Telephone Manufacturing Company at its factory in Dulwich. The development of new thermo-plastics in 1959 meant telephones could easily be produced in a different range of colours like this green version. The dial label on this telephone is not original and was likely added for display purposes.
