Working History — 1857
Cable, telegraph cable
This section of submarine cable was used in the first attempts to establish a transatlantic telegraph link. After several attempts, a link was established in August 1858 between Newfoundland and Valentia Island off the west coast of Ireland. The cable only functioned until 18 September however, when the link failed and could not be repaired.
