Indicator, pneumatic tube system indicator
This pneumatic tube system indicator was used by the General Post Office engineers in the latter half of the 19th century. The GPO introduced a system of pneumatic tubes to carry messages when telegraph services became congested in the 1850s. The indicator was used to show whether a carrier was in the tube or if the tube was clear.
