Card, trade card
Copper-engraved trade card issued by the scale-maker Charles Sommers located at At the Hand and Scales, Near St Dunstan's Church Fleet Street London. The card is engraved with two vignettes depicting balance scales manufactured by the firm, the bottom vignette showing the scales in use in a dockside warehouse. The illustrations are signed 'B. Webb Scrip.' and 'Morrison Sculp' The text reads 'Charles Sommers, Makes & Sells all sorts of Scales, Weights & Steelyards, For Foreign use. Scales with their respective Weights or Conis, as Spanish and Portugal Gold Coin Barbadoes Virginia & all y West India Silver Currency Turky (sic) Venice & Guiney Scales & Weights Diamond and Assay Scales and all other Sorts for Exportation at Reasonable Rates N.B. Shopkeepers Scales, &c. kept in Repair Yearly.' At the bottom of the trade card the following text is printed in French 'Charles Sommers Faifeur de Balances A L'Enseigne de la Main et des Balances proche de l'Eglise de St Dunstan dans Fleet Street a Londres. Fait et vend toutes Sortes de Balances et de Poids. pour Le Transport aux prix les plus raisonables'.
