Guillelmine Charlotte Princesse Hereditaire d'Hanover
A coloured print of a woman entitled, 'Guillelmine Charlotte Princesse Hereditaire d'Hanover', with the text, 'Fille de Jean Frederic Marquis de Brandebourg Anspach, à épousé en juillet 1705 Georges Auguste, Prince Héréditaire d'Hanover', with the imprint 'A Paris chez I. Mariette rue S. Jacques aux colonnes d'Hercules'.
Willhelmina Charlotte Caroline of Brandenburg Anspach (1683-1737) is wearing a loosely fitted mantua, with a separate stomacher. On her head is a fontange, a structure of wire and lace that was named after Mademoiselle de Fontange, one of the mistresses of the King of France and the first to wear it. The princess is also wearing gloves and holding a fan.
The publisher of this print is Jean Mariette (1660 – 1742), a French printmaker and publisher who inherited his father’s shop at Colonnes d’Hercules in Paris in 1691.
