Elizabeth de Bregy Marquise d'Escots
A print of a woman and her pet dog, entitled, 'Elizabeth de Bregy Marquise d'Escots', and inscribed, ''Gravé par A. Trouvain avec privilege du Roy, 1694'/ se vend a Paris chez le dit Trouvain rue S. Jacques au grand Monarque atenant les Mathurins'.
The lady is wearing a mantua with contrasting lining and an elaborately adorned petticoat. On her head is a fontange, a structure of wires, lace and silk. This type of headdress was first worn by and named after Mademoiselle de Fontange, one of the mistresses of the King of France. The lady’s accessories are a fan, a walking stick and a dog.
The engraver and publisher is Antoine Trouvain (c.1653 – 1708), a Frenchman specialised in engraving and publishing fashion plates and almanacs. It is not certain whether he designed the print as well, though it is likely.
