‘Homme de qualité en habit de d’hiver’ (A man of high rank in winter clothing), 1678, Jean Dieu de Saint-Jean : inscription J.D. de St Jean delin. à Paris sur le quai des grand augustins aux deux globes. De Saint-Jean drew the design for the print, but it is not clear whether he also made the engraving and coloured it. The address tells us the location where the print was sold.
A man wearing wide breeches and green embroidered waistcoat with long sleeves under a brocade or embroidered coat (justaucorps). He has a fur muff (connected to his coat by red ribbon) with red bow and a sword. Around his neck is a lace cravat and he is wearing a curled periwig.
The print was designed by Jean Dieu de Saint-Jean (1654-1695), to whom about a 100 prints are attributed from the period 1678-1695. They mostly portray the dress of men and women of high rank, often at the court of France. His father, also named Jean Dieu, was a painter too. When his son was accepted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris he changed his name to Jean Dieu de Saint-Jean, after his patron saint, in order to distinguish himself from his father and from other artists named Dieu. Though De Saint-Jean initially was trained as a portrait painter he is mostly known for his fashion plates.
