Dame en dessabillé de Ville

A coloured print of a woman described as 'Dame en dessabillé de Ville (Lady of high rank wearing informal clothing for town)', inscribed, le Pautre delin. et sculp., with the address, 'sous les charnier Sts. Inocens, c. 1675.

The woman is wearing an informal gown and black wrap as she walks outdoors.

Jean Lepautre is the designer, etcher, publisher of this print. He was the first of the Lepautre dynasty, brother of Antoine the architect, and father of Jacques and Pierre. He was a pupil of Adam Philippon, who published his first plates. Not much of his life was documented but he became a member of the Académie in 1677. His widow, Marguerite Gastelier (d.1698), took over the publishing activities after his death until her own death in 1698.
