Ornatus Muliebris Anglicanus or The Severall Habits of English Women, from the Nobilitie to the Country Woman, as They are in These Times
Plate 12 of Wenceslaus Hollar's 'The Severall Habits of English Women' showing a fashionable lady in full winter dress. Etiquette required her to remove the mask if she met friends or acquaintences.
Wenceslaus Hollar's 'The Severall Habits of English Women' is a series of twenty-six etchings devoted to English women's costume in the late 1630s. Plates one to sixteen show the most elaborate fashions worn by ladies of the highest rank at court. The following eight depict the outfits likely to have been worn by a smart woman in town. In the final image, a woman dressed for the country is shown carrying a basket of vegetables.
