Westminster Abbey. Funeral of the late Most Noble George, Duke of Northumberland
George Percy, the 5th Duke of Northumberland, died on 21 August 1867 at the age of 89 at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. His body lay in state there until it was brought down to Westminster Abbey for the funeral and internment on 30 August 1867. At the age of 86, George Percy inherited the dukedom after the death of his cousin, Algernon Percy, who was childless. He was a Tory politician and between 1842 and 1846 held the position of Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard in Sir Robert Peel's government.
The admission ticket to the funeral is printed on cream card with a black border. The funeral was at one o'clock and the bearer of the ticket was admitted at twelve o'clock. Mourners were requested to use the West Cloister door and the admission ticket stated that 'No Person admitted except in Mourning'. The ticket was authorised by the dean of Westminster Abbey, A P Stanley, and on the reverse, in ink, the name ' T [?] M McLean' has been written.
