Working History — 1897-1976
Stamp
This brass stamp with Hebrew and English lettering was used in the kosher wine-making and distilling workshop of M. Chaikin & Co. Ltd located on the corner of Brick Lane and Fournier Street, Spitalfields. The Hebrew letters spell the word 'kasher' or Kosher. M.Chaikin & Co produced kosher wine and spirits both in the UK and in Palestine. They also ran an off-licence at 72-74 Brick Lane, and supplied London's East End Jewish community with kosher wines and spirits for nearly 80 years. The workshop and distillery closed in 1976.
