Decorative arts — C. 1800
Necklace
Necklace consisting of three rows of gold filigree chain uniting 12 malachite cameos. The cameos are engraved with classical heads and mounted in gold ornamented with filigrain rosettes. The necklace was made in Italy or France.
Malachite was a prized rarity at this date. Russia was the principal source of malachite for jewellery in the early 19th century and the Imperial family controlled much of its production.
