Printed Ephemera — 1795
Warrant
This is an arrest warrant for John Bancock on a charge of assaulting John Savage. It has been signed by the Lord Mayor of London, Thomas Skinner, who was also the Chief Magistrate. The warrant is addressed to constables and officers of the peace. London had no centrally organised police force in the eighteenth century. Parishes appointed constables and other officers to maintain law and order. It is also addressed to the Keeper of the Poultry Compter, a prison for debtors and petty criminals in the City of London.
