Printed Ephemera — 1844
Copy of Verses on the Dreadful Murder of Mrs Crouch at Marylebone
Broadside ballad printed by Thomas Birt, recounting in verse the murder of Frances Elizabeth Crouch by her husband William. William was convicted of murder at the Old Bailey and publicly executed at Newgate on 27th Mary 1844.
Broadsides recounting the most gruesome murders and crimes were particularly popular with newshungry Londoners. Mass produced and sold cheaply they were primarily published by a small number of printers many of whom, such as Thomas Birt, James Catnach and James Pitts were based around the Seven Dials area of London. Spelling and grammar was often poor and the details not always accurate.
