Examination of James Graham for Attempt to Murder Thomas Blewett
Criminal broadside recounting the murder of Thomas Blewett by James Graham on 25th April 1846. The broadside records that 16 year old John Graham shot and killed 36 year old Blewett with a pistol in the open street by Morgan's Cook Shop in Drury Lane. The bullet entered the victim's right breast and came out through the shoulder bone. He was taken was taken to Kings College Hospital for treatment but died as a result of his injuries. The broadside includes several witness statements and a woodcut engraving depicting the prisoner in leg chains and a view of the crime scene.
Broadsides recounting particularly gruesome and scandalous crimes and murders were mass printed and cheaply sold to newshungry Londoners. Primarily published by a small number of printers many of whom, such as Thomas Birt, James Catnach and James Pitts were based around the Seven Dials area of London the spelling and grammar was often poor and the details not always accurate.
