Printed Ephemera — 1861-1864
The London Dustman. "Dust Hoi! Dust Hoi!"
Engraved illustration based on a photograph showing a dustman. He wears a fan tail hat, a short tunic, rolled-up trousers and ankle boots. His hand is raised to his mouth as he calls out to announce his arrival. Dustmen collected ash and cinders from households in heavy horse-drawn box-carts, delivering it to dustyards for sorting. They had a reputation for having an extraordinary resistance to disease and illness. The illustration appeared in Henry Mayhew's 'London Labour and the London Poor: The condition of those that will work, cannot work, and will not work', Vol. 1., 'London Street-Folk', first published in 1861. No. 34. page 519.
