Setting stick, Ludlow matrix setting stick
Oblong, white metal alloy guage with a screw at the top. Numerals from 1 to 23 are stamped from bottom to top on the left hand side. 'Made in the U.S.A.' is stamped on the reverse. Distributed by Ludlow Industries (UK) Ltd., Conbar House, Mead Lane, Hertford, Herts. SG13 7AT. Used for setting hot brass slugs produced by the 'Ludlow' machine. These were mainly uesd for captions and headings.
The Guardian stopped printing using 'hot metal' processes in 1987. The following year the newspaper donated a Harris Intertype Monarch typesetting machine and various hand tools to the Museum of London.
