The Street-Seller of Crockery-Ware Bartering for Old Clothes
Engraved illustration based on a photograph showing a street crockery seller bartering for old clothes. The vendor wears a top hat, frock coat and trousers, and is holding up an old garment for inspection. At his feet their is a pile of old clothes and a top hat, and to his side a basket full of the crockery he is hoping to exchange. Crockery sellers or 'crocks' preferred to barter for goods rather than sell. The illustration was published in Henry Mayhew's 'London Labour and the London Poor: The condition of those that will work, cannot work, and will not work', Vol. 1., 'London Street-Folk', first published in 1861. No. 18. page 273.
