Printed Ephemera — 1861-1864
Orange Mart, Duke's Place
Engraved illustration based on a photograph showing the orange market in Duke's Place. Costermongers and other street sellers purchased their supplies of oranges and other foreign fruit such as pineapples, melons, coconuts and grapes, from the mart at Duke's Place. The smallest quantity available was fifty. The oranges are arranged in large baskets outside an open-fronted shop. An assortment of customers are shown arriving with their baskets to purchase goods. A woman wearing a bonnet and ragged cloak is carrying a covered basket on her head. The illustration was published in Henry Mayhew's 'London Labour and the London Poor: The condition of those that will work, cannot work, and will not work', Vol. 1., 'London Street-Folk', first published in 1861. No. 9 page 129.
