The Street Dog-Seller
Engraved illustration showing a street seller of dogs. The top-hatted man carries a small dog under each arm, and another held on a leash stands at his feet. The illustration was published in Henry Mayhew's 'London Labour and the London Poor: The condition of those that will work, cannot work, and will not work', Vol. 1., 'London Street-Folk', first published in 1861. Street dog-sellers frequented Regent Street, the West End squares, the Serpentine, the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England. The most favoured dogs were small terriers and spaniels.
