Trousers, suit trousers
Trousers from a man's grey wool jersey suit, c. 1970. Designed by Mr. Fish. Michael Fish opened his shop in Clifford Street in 1966. A customer who shopped there in the early 1970s remembered is as 'a funny shop. You went in and nobody took any notice of you. They were all in the back sort of gossiping and having a party'. The trousers are cut with straight legs and pressed with creases.
This suit is much more restrained than the flamboyant, exhibitionist clothes for which Mr. Fish was famous in the late 1960s but its close cut and clinging fabric hugged the body. Its purchaser never wore because he found it too revealing. Mr. Fish's label 'Peculiar to Mr. Fish' summed up his extrovert character and his love of the outrageous.
