Prehistoric — Early Iron Age
Sheath, dagger sheath
Dagger sheath made from birch wood laid in vertical strips down the blade and bound with thin bronze strips joined down the back by fold-over jointing and some rivets. The sheath is decorated with rows of dimples across the front of each strap and forming a triangle border across the top of the sheath, punched into the interior surface. It had a British-type double loop suspension system, now gone but presumably of iron, the positions of the loops being shown exactly by small bulges in the bronze strips (extracted from Jope, E. M., 2000, Early Celtic Art). Found with an iron dagger (accession number O1746b - Hallstatt D type dagger).
