Overcoat
Camel hair overcoat, 1936. Custom-made by Austin Reed of Regent Street.
Austin Reed's flagship store opened in Regent Street in 1926. Selling only menswear, it offered its customers an imaginative and engaging shopping experience. Shoppers could buy sportswear, country clothing and rainwear in the oak panelled Tudor Galleries or order a custom made shirt in the Louis XV room. The shop specialised in high quality ready-made tailoring but it also offered a bespoke service.
This double-breasted overcoat in 'teddy bear' fabric was made for John Hartopp who worked in the research laboratories of Messrs Thomas Firth and John Brown Ltd., steel makers in Sheffield, from 1930-1939. He wore the coat, which was extremely warm, for driving.
